Why Hiring a Web Designer Is A Waste of Money

Want to know one surefire way to waste your small business budget? HIRE A WEB DESIGNER.

I see too many amazing entrepreneurs drain their savings to build big, beautiful websites —only to get miserably mediocre results. Has this happened to you (or someone you love)?

Now, befooore you go calling my attorney friend here, let me tell ya — this all-too-common tale of the ROI that couldn’t is not actually your web designer’s fault. You could have THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WEBSITE in the world and still not make any money.

In this week’s episode of Awkward Marketing, I’m taking on why you shouldn’t a hire web designer — AND WHO YOU NEED INSTEAD.

If you’re thinking of hiring a web designer, I made this one for you.

The moral of the story is — you need more than a web designer.

You need a triple threat: one part web designer, one part marketer, one part business strategist. Your website isn’t floating in outer space all by its lonesome; it’s intricately connected to your business and marketing plans. You need someone who understands how to build you a tool that you can leverage to reach your business goals.

How do you know if you’re hiring a triple threat or just another web designer?

Here are 3 things to keep in mind when hiring someone to build a website that will build your business:

  1. Their process: A triple threat will have strategy baked into their process. They will be just as interested in discovering how a website can best serve your business as the fonts and colors you like. However, if their web design process is only about the aesthetics, chances are you’ve got a designer on your hands, not a triple threat.
  2. The questions they ask you: Pay attention to what they ask you on the sales call. A triple threat will care about where your business is headed next, your marketing plan, and where the website fits into your long-term vision. But, when a web designer steers the conversation to “What do you want your website to look like?” too soon, you’re probably not talking to a triple threat.
  3. Their testimonials: What do their clients praise about the web design experience? Is it all about good looks and digital bells & whistles? A triple threat will have case studies and success stories that laud both their design prowess and the results they deliver.

Not to get all awkward on ya, but if triple threat’s what you’re looking for, you’re in the right place. The design/marketing/business strategy combo is our sweet spot.
