2014 Year in Review: The Color Palettes of My Life

I love color. Finding the perfect palette is one of my favorite parts of the design process.

Design Seeds is a digital amusement park for color lovers. If I could, I’d get a season pass and spend my days frolicking between warm and cool worlds. (Go ahead and bookmark Design Seeds now, if you haven’t already. I’ll wait.)

One of my goals for 2015 is to Design Seeds my life. When I need to refill my creative tank, I take long walks with my camera and look for color inspiration in the world around me – so, why not start a color library of my own? The idea isn’t to re-invent the (color) wheel or usurp the Design Seeds throne (who could?!) but to strengthen my eye for color and infuse my designs with real world magic.

Design Seeds’ color palettes are drawn from nature, travel, architecture, food, animals, art – but what about people? What about memories? That question got me scratching my chin. So, for my first additions to the RKA color library, I decided to start with palettes inspired by the people I love and the memories I cherish. A 2014 year in review…through the palettes of my life…

Here goes! (Follow me on Instagram for the moments that inspired these color palettes.)

Reviewing the year in color was more meaningful and illuminating than I thought it would be. I discovered that the color of the year was yellow: the color of our house, our living room, and even the flowers in my bridal bouquet. Years ago, when I pictured my future — I pictured a bright yellow room with high ceilings. That room — and its signature color — came true in 2014 and is reflected in these color palettes.

My favorite author, Vladimir Nabokov, experienced numbers, letters, and memories as colors in his mind’s eye and now I realize that I do, too. My besty (featured in the final December color palette, Besty Beach Colors) bought me his book Alphabet In Color when we were still in college and it wasn’t until I was halfway through this project that I saw the subconscious influence there.

What about you? What were your 2014 colors? Tell you what! Send me your favorite 2014 snapshot and I’ll send you back a palette of your very own. Send me an email and I’ll hook you up! I think I might make this an annual tradition!
